NSX Traceflow Utility

Understanding NSX's Traceflow Utility

What Traceflow is for:



Traceflow is useful in the following scenarios: 


Troubleshooting network failures to see the exact path that traffic takes 

Performance monitoring to see link utilization 

Network planning to see how a network will behave when it is in production 



Traceflow operations require communication among vCenter, NSX Manager, the NSX Controller cluster and the netcpa user world agents on the hosts.

For Traceflow to work as expected, make sure that the controller cluster is connected and in healthy state.


Step 1: 
Log into the Web Client and Select the NSX Plugin



Step 2: 
Select Traceflow on the left.


Step 3: 
Select the source vm.


Step 4: 
Select the vnic of that vm.


Step 5: 
Now select the destination.


Step 6:  
In this case, select Layer 3.



Step 7: 
Add the IP address of the source vm.


Step 8:  
Verify your selections and click on Trace.



Step 9: 
Wait a few seconds...


Step 10: 
In this case, notice the firewall dropped such traffic. The firewall demo is found on the previous post. 



Step 11:  
Same trace without the firewall rule preventing that type of traffic.
